lighting setup: double back side lighting

i am working through a few different lighting setups as part of my 365, so i wanted to also provide the lighting setup diagrams for the shots, as well. last night i did a take off a poster i saw for an athletic clothing company, where there were lights coming in from about 45 degrees to the side and behind the subject. the effect lights both sides of the face equally, with the light wrapping around to the front of the face enough to give it some definition but keeping it a few stops darker. here is the setup diagram:

My Strobox Diagrami used my d70 with the 7-300/f4-5.6 (EXIF: iso 200, 70mm, f/5.6, 1/500 sec). the camera was tethered with two chained sb-29 cables to an sb800 strobe, which also remotely fired an sb600 on the other stand. both strobes were set to manual 1/8 power, and shot through white umbrellas. i added the reflector to the front to give a little more light to the face, since i didn’t want to bump the strobes up anymore and risk blowing out any highlights.

working with a one year old as a test subject is a little difficult, but i got the look i expected. it’s probably not an all-situation lighting setup, especially since for something light an infant shoot you’d really want the face lit, but for an edgier athletic or commercial shoot, with some sharpening and some contrast, it will be nice to have it in the bag.

this was one of the final shots, and i’ll post more in the next few days.
